Dear Arizona artists,
We invite you to review the following call for artists to see what opportunities speak to your talents.
Thank you for your continued engagement and contributions to growing the arts and culture community in Arizona.
Artlink Inc. was founded by artists in 1989 as a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and keeps the arts integral to the development of our city. Artlink works to connect artists of all disciplines, arts venues, arts supporting businesses and advocates in an effort to strengthen and promote the community's unique culture. Your voice as an artist is the most important part of this process and you help to keep our arts and culture initiatives growing and vibrant throughout the state of Arizona.
By applying to open calls your talents also encourage our partners, city developers and the greater community of businesses that support the arts to continue to contribute significant financial support to the kinds of projects that make a real difference in the lives of working artists in our state. We appreciate each and every submission as well as the many past winners that have already transformed the image of Arizona through creative projects that inspire, uplift and promote positive messages through art. Every time you participate in an open call your voice is assured equal consideration alongside other talented individuals who have also submitted for the opportunity to display their work on unique platforms and/or a wide variety of commission projects that aim to enrich the dynamic role that culture plays throughout the greater metro Phoenix area and beyond.
By becoming an Articipant with Artlink you will be notified about new opportunities through our newsletter every month in additional to receiving many other services that support the growth of your career as an artist. Artlink also supports a variety of community-based art events and initiatives, including the First Friday and Third Friday Art Walks, The Artist Forward Fund, the annual Juried Exhibition, Phoenix Urban Guide, IN FLUX, and the annual Art Detour and Art d’Core Gala. Most recently, Artlink has moved to a new location at Park Central in midtown Phoenix to support inclusive projects that encourage collaboration and community building. This ART+FORM project is dedicated to developing new spaces for artists to exhibit, affordable studio spaces for artists to work in and the renewal of arts and culture initiatives at the city center.
Artlink is supported by City of Phoenix Office of Arts and Culture, Downtown Phoenix Inc., Arizona Commission on the Arts, and several corporate and community partners. Visit artlinkphx.org to sign up for the Artlink newsletter or connect socially on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
The following call for artists of all practices is presented by True North Studio for The Pemberton (“Owners”) with support provided by Artlink Inc. The deadline to submit is January 19, 2021 by 5:00 p.m. (local Arizona time).
BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW
Owners are interested in working with an artist or artists, or an artist team or teams, to creatively address four exterior walls on containers at The Pemberton.
Project: The Pemberton PHX Muralist Residency
Address: 1121 N. 2nd St., Phoenix, AZ 85004
Request: For four individual artists or artist teams to take part in a collaborative program to produce four flat murals located within The Pemberton complex.
Budget: $2,000 plus cost of materials for each selected artist or team.
Overview: As part of the opening of the mixed-use historic property, Pemberton PHX invites mural artists to apply to a new residency program that includes a shipping container mural wall, the underwriting of materials, onsite/secured storage for supplies, a food & beverage stipend, and programming crossovers with other tenant-members of Pemberton PHX collective.
Pemberton PHX is True North Studio’s newest platform for creatives to engage the Downtown Phoenix community in the magic of art, entertainment, food, drink, FilmBar, and fitness. The Pemberton, a mindfully curated outdoor collective will house a dozen-plus unique experiences and get people enjoying many things we've been forced to give up with opening partners: Abnormal Co. (taproom), Artlink Inc., Bitch On The Run/Smokin' Hot Bitch (Breakfast Bitch Express/BBQ concept), Cloth & Flame (event partner), Dino’s Pizza Napoletana, FilmBar, Growhouse, Saint Pasta, The Black Art Preservation Trust, and Vikara Yoga Events. Essentially an outdoor playground with unique offerings inclusive of any adventure and art seeker, Pemberton, was designed to ignite the taste buds, a sense of exploration, community, and health.
Pemberton PHX is True North Studio’s newest platform for creatives to engage the Downtown Phoenix community in the magic of art. Pemberton PHX, already a hub for creatives, sports a mural by Phoenix locals, Nyla Lee and Breeze 1, a myriad of shipping container alley art, and the original James Baldwin painting by Antoinette Cauley. This is all in addition to structures and installations built by makers such as Spectacle Works and Bang Bang Design. Of course, not forgetting the permanent partner and fixture of an outdoor FilmBar satellite location.
The Installations: The murals can be made in any genre including being wholly abstract, figurative, landscape-based, or any combination thereof, while working to create dynamic compositions through the use of bold, bright and uplifting imagery. Incorporating inspiration from The Pemberton, from the history of the place, and the communities it serves are greatly encouraged. With many new tenants and businesses placed throughout the open-air grounds of the Pemberton, these murals are meant to be a welcoming presence to Phoenix residents and visitors and invitation to come check out a host of new offerings and experiences in the Roosevelt Row Arts District of downtown Phoenix.
The property features four mural walls on the side of shipping containers, with three of them measuring 27.5 ft long by 10 ft tall, and the fourth being 41 ft long by 8 ft tall. The murals must be able to stand up to changes in weather, to endure harsh temperatures (direct sun), and be constructed in such a manner that they complement both the structure and viewing experience.
Artist(s) will provide licensing and reproduction rights, and permit the photography of artworks, including their use in promotional materials. This license also provides the client with the right to reproduce, publicly display, and distribute the images, graphics, digital assets, or digital images of commissioned works in promotional materials. All reasonable efforts will be made to credit the artist in promotions and when communicating with the media.
This request for qualifications is to identify an individual artist or artists, or an artistic team or teams, that can produce distinctive murals. Artists whose aesthetics are bright, colorful, and energetic are encouraged to apply.
The proposed art space measures are as follows:
Three container walls are 27.5 ft long by 10 ft tall, and a fourth container wall is 41 ft long by 8 ft tall. Refer to images here.
All Arizona artists, designers, creative individuals and artistic teams with connections to the downtown Phoenix community are encouraged to apply.
The works will not contain images or messages that include nudity, political, religious, advertising or otherwise controversial themes.

Project: The 40th Annual Governor’s Arts Awards – Call for Art
Budget: $400 Artist Honorarium to each artist contributing an award
Selection: Up to 16 artists with existing works that fit the parameters below
BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW
Since 1981, the Governor’s Arts Awards have recognized more than 250 distinguished Arizona artists, arts organizations, businesses, educators and individuals for their passion, creativity and devotion to the excellence and diversity of Arizona’s arts and cultural community. The Governor’s Arts Awards event is much more than a tradition. The awards reflect more than four decades of the best in Arizona’s arts and culture community and the magnificent contributions they have made to our state’s arts and cultural heritage.
Nominations for the Governor’s Arts Awards are accepted in the following categories: Artist, Arts Organization, Business, Arts Educator, and The Shelley Award. Nominees are announced in early winter, followed by special receptions in honor of all nominees at which finalists in each category are announced, along with the Philanthropist Award honoree and the Shelley Award honoree. The Governor’s Arts Awards event is then held in early spring where category winners are presented with awards; in order to celebrate local artistry in Arizona, winners are awarded with a work of art as unique as their accomplishments. This is a Call for Art for the 2021 Awards.
The selected artworks will celebrate artistry, culture and unique characteristics of Arizona, its artists and artforms, as the artist sees them. Works can be either 2D or 3D, and while there are no specific size or medium restrictions, submissions must be easy to hold or carry and transport. Artworks will be given to the recipients following the Awards. Artists must provide transportation packaging.
As a nonprofit organization, Arizona Citizens for the Arts produces this event solely on grant and underwriting funding from local corporations and individuals deeply invested in the arts and culture in Arizona. They offer a $400 Artist Honorarium for contributing artists and complimentary invitations to the event (tickets valued at $150/ea). Leading up to and at the event, the artists and artwork are showcased in a variety of print and digital media. Contributing artists are also asked to create a +/- two-minute video of themselves 30 days prior to the event, so that we may promote them and showcase their art.
This opportunity is open to all artists currently residing in Arizona. You must be registered as an Artlink Articipant (Articipant fees are optional). All registered artist Articipants are included in ArtistsAZ.com, Arizona’s newest statewide artist directory.
